I sighed in frustration, slamming Jaxon’s journal shut and staring out of the window into the darkness beyond. Black tree silhouettes swayed in the wind, and I could just about make out the slightly paler sky and the sea beyond them.

I had been on the island for over two weeks now, and I still hadn’t gotten any closer to finding this damn gold. I shouldn’t have expected it to be straightforward, or to be honest, even possible, but it had been something that I could focus on to take my mind off everything else, and in a funny way, it made me feel closer to Jaxon. I had been through that journal over and over, and still couldn’t find any reference to the map. There were mentions of certain obstacles around the treasure, but the main hurdle was tracking it down first. I’d deal with the medieval booby traps later.

To be honest, I had only been flipping through it this evening. The guys were having dinner downstairs, while Asher had brought mine up on a tray. Maverick hadn’t really meant what he’d said and had offered a stiff apology the next day, but I had reacted like a sulky child and demanded my tray in my room as he had decreed. It had sparked another row, the upshot being that I was sitting up here alone while the three of them laughed and joked downstairs. Okay, maybe they were talking more than laughing, but I could hear Maverick’s voice, and the sound made me feel warm and then cold over and over as I wavered between missing him and hating him all over again.

The constant ache I’d felt for him was much reduced after the first few days of our time together, but then I felt it starting to build again, and I struggled with it. My dreams were full of him—his body, his hands, his mouth, and his cock buried inside me—and I would wake regularly, slick with need for him, and the ache in my core and my heart increased with every day we were apart. I was determined to fight it though. What I hadn’t expected to have to fight was the strange fact that I missed him, his quiet strength, and our conversations over dinner where we’d talked about anything and everything, as long as it didn’t get personal. Being a masochist, I went over and over that afternoon on the boat, cursing myself for the reaction to the mark that still gleamed on my shoulder. I had overreacted in a stupid way. I knew he hadn’t done it on purpose, but the appearance of the mark, coupled with what I had just let him do to me, had thrown me into a pit of guilt that I swiftly drowned in. I had loved Jaxon so much, and it seemed like I was forgetting him to be with Maverick, even if it was what my wolf and my body were compelling me to do. What was driving me crazy was that it hadn’t just been the sex, which had felt amazing.
